Child Centered Divorce

Creating a Child-Centered Divorce

When child custody becomes war, there can be no winners. The saddest “losers” are the children.

Child custody does not have to be decided between two warring factions. Conscientious parents should make decisions together, putting the best interests of their children first. According to Rosalind Sedacca, CCT, author of How Do I Tell the Kids about the Divorce?, child custody decisions require honest communication between mature parents who are willing to put the needs of their children ahead of personal interests.

In order to ensure the well-being of the children during and after a divorce, Ms. Sedacca suggests parents ask themselves the following questions:

  • How can we work together to lessen the emotional and physical damage our children may suffer as we go through the divorce process?
  • How can our children best be financially supported through divorce and beyond?
  • Can we work together to show our children that they did not cause or create the challenges of divorce?
  • What can we do as parents to make sure our children do not lose their self-esteem?
  • Which parent will be able to provide the best home environment?
  • What percentage of time—days, weeks, etc. should our children be with each parent?
  • How can we as parents best divide our assets to support our children both physically and emotionally?
